Matthew Gibb, MD, MHCDS

I have been fortunate to build leadership skills along my career through clinical program development, group practice governance, system integration, and other “on the job” learning experiences. My transition to the System CMO role led me to critically assess my strengths and weaknesses as a physician executive, concluding that a comprehensive educational immersion in a health care management program would improve my ability to make a difference. Along those lines I was also very interested in obtaining a credential that adds a level of respect in my interactions with non-physician leaders - and the MHCDS program was the perfect fit.

Matthew, tell us about your professional experience.

I am the Executive Vice President and System Chief Medical Officer for the Carle Health System in Urbana, Illinois; a vertically integrated delivery system incorporating an 800 provider multispecialty group, a provider sponsored health plan, 6 affiliated hospitals, and the Carle Illinois College of Medicine. I specialize in Interventional Cardiology.   In addition to my work at Carle, I currently serve on the Board of Directors for the American Medical Group Association (AMGA).

Why did you choose to pursue the MHCDS program?

While researching master's program options, the Dartmouth MHCDS program surfaced repeatedly in my conversations with colleagues. The class demographic which includes students who have already established themselves as leaders as well as a broad diversity of backgrounds was especially appealing. The opportunity to interact closely with world class faculty from the Tuck School and the Geisel School of Medicine cemented my decision to pursue the MHCDS degree at Dartmouth.

What has been the best part of the program for you?

The relationships I have formed and the experiences shared with classmates are so rewarding. MHCDS places an emphasis on group interaction and team learning that permeates every aspect of the program. This approach enriches the learning experience while also fostering friendships that will extend far beyond graduation.

What would you tell a candidate for the MHCDS program about your experience?

The Dartmouth experience is so rich. The MHCDS program offers a mixture of residential and online teaching that is rigorous but manageable. The focus on preparing leaders to navigate rapid change in healthcare and make a difference is a core strength of MHCDS. One of the most rewarding aspects is the opportunity to interact, build friendships, and share experiences with fellow students. Exposure to healthcare policy thought leaders is something not offered in any similar program. The MHCDS program is simply a fantastic overall experience.
